That was already inevitable.  I hear he's a decent guy (he lives down the street and is buddies with a buddy) but he veered hard left in the primary to win the Democratic nomination.  As a Goldman guy, he should understand budgets...but Corzine was a Goldman guy as well...and did not.  I think we all need to look at Illinois and how fucked that state is to see how certain policies ultimately turn out.

Illinois is weird because rural districts hold a lot of power at the state level and things get fucked.  The state govt had open animosity towards the tax base, and makes policies specifically to fuck them

The real issue in Chicago and statewide is that they offered massive public pension promises (the pay for vote thing targeting public workers was virtually originated in Chicago) and they locked those benefits in via State constitutional amendment that says those benefits may never be trimmed.  Okay, on the surface, that seems fair.  However, people are drawing 10X to 20X in pensions versus what they contributed over their lifetimes as public sector employees.  Who picks up the difference ?  Everyone NOT a state employee.  Starting to look less fair, but even this is manageable...except for one thing:  they never actually funded the pensions at the level necessary to cover that 10X to 20X.  Hence the $250B pension shortfall with no way out except massive tax increases coupled with a massive reduction in state services.  The problem with massive tax increases and reduction in services is that you can vote with your feet and get the fuck out of the state without penalty.  IIRC, Illinois is one of two states with net decrease in population, further impacting state revenues and creating an even bigger problem.  This is more or less what happened in Puerto Rico:  Politicians made promises on borrowed money, the bill for which always comes due.
